Everyone we know has had Teh Sick in their houses lately. Everyone’s children seem to have runny noses, hacking coughs and general yuckiness. My little niece NC even had pneumonia last week – she was seriously sick. Happily, she is now feeling all better after numerous very unpleasant antibiotic shots and breathing treatments.
I thought we had somehow escaped. The older kids have remained generally well all winter (which is more and more the case each year they get past being little kids), while C is a freakishly healthy child. She just rarely gets sick at all, and when she does, it’s really mild. She’s never had a bad stomach upset, and she’s yet to have her first ear infection.
But in the last few days, the bad stuff found its way under our door or in thru the leaky, old windows. It caught up with us, and poor C has a nasty cold going on. She’s coughing and her nose is running, and worst of all, her little eyes are swollen and gooey. This morning I had to help her get them unstuck by wiping them with a wet, warm cloth. She’s pitiful.
I have accepted my lot as a work-outside-the-home mama, and there are lots of things about this role that I think are big positives for myself, my children and our family in general. I like what I do, and I like showing my children how to take care of themselves. And since C spends her days with either her father or her grandmother, I know she’s in loving hands at all times. But on days like this, when she looks so puny and peaked, I really long to just spend the day at home with her, fully focused on nurturing her and making sure her every need is met …by her mama. It’s really, really hard to leave them to go to work when they are sick.
