C is 21 months now and is starting to play with real “kid” toys, rather than simple baby toys. She and her cousin NC like to play pretend, strolling their dolls around and playing cooking with NC’s toy kitchen. Because there is such a big gap in age between C’s next-oldest sibling (10 years), we don’t have too many little kid toys left around our house. At 11, E still plays with toys, but these days the toys are likely to be his skateboard, lacrosse stick and his collection of knives and camping gear; Obviously, none of these items are suitable for toddler sister to enjoy! He does also make his own toys a lot – like last week when he spent several hours out by the creek trying to catch a bird with a laundry basket (no luck).

J is about to start high school, so pretty much all of her little girl toys have long since been handed down to younger cousins and friends, but she did keep a few special things, and it’s so fun to see C starting to play with them now. These include the beautiful wooden doll bed that her grandparents had made for J when she was C’s age, and also her Breyer horses (she’s been collecting them since she was a toddler, and also has several of mine from when I was a little girl), and her Breyer barn. We also still have the wooden castle that used to occupy the boys – both of them, together – for hours at a time.

We’ve taken the barn and castle back out of storage for C to play with, and C has some of her own toys, too, although not too many yet… It’s fun to see toys scattered around the living room floor again.

  1. I was just thinking Nola (17 months) is getting to the age when she needs more than her blocks and books. Alas, we live in a small 2 bedroom apt., so we have to get rid of stuff to add new stuff.

  2. I still have all my Breyer horses. LOVED them. Now I just need to find a place to put them. Packing peanuts and boxes don’t do them justice.

  3. Another Breyer Horse fan here–but I loved mine too much to give them over to the dubious care of my four-year-old! We also have the castle in the above picture, but while its 14-year-old owner passed down another castle to the 8-year-old earlier this week, he is still holding on to that one for now. I was the kind of kid who never broke a toy, and am the mother of kids who mostly end up breaking them ALL, which is an aspect of parenting I have found frustrating.

  4. I had never heard of a Breyer Horse until reading this post, then yesterday I was shopping at the Pottery Barn outlet and saw them for $14.99. Think I’ll pick up a couple and save them for Christmas gifts.
