Gettin’ my sanctimony on

A reader posted a link to this fantastic essay in the comments below my Steve McNair post (the one below this one).

It’s about sanctimony and judgment and empathy.

I realize that I’ve written several very judgmental and sanctimonious blog posts lately – about Mark Sanford and John Edwards and Steve McNair. It’s good to get a reminder – especially from an essay as fine as that one – that we are all imperfect, and that judgment is its own kind of sin.

I get that, and I am now feeling a bit ashamed of my run of public sanctimony. I mean, I do think cheating on your spouse is really, really scummy, but yeah, sanctimony is bad.

So I’ll try to lay off for a while.

  1. My husband sent me this article which we both enjoyed:

Just like food disorders aren;t really about food, affairs aren;t really about sex.

  2. There is a lot of pain in some of the comments attached to the article Katie posted. I can see why victims of affairs become so sensitive about the public exposure of alleged celebrity affairs – it brings back terrible memories, especially for those who are trying to stay together and work things out.

We shouldn’t dwell on these stories, because (a)we don’t know the entire story, and (b) there are much better things to do and think about, like turning off the television, learning a new sport/hobby, spending time with family & friends. Let’s all give it a rest.

  3. I always look at it as…this is your blog and you write about what you want and feel at the moment. I don’t really think you need to be shameful for writing how you feel about issues. If readers don’t like it they don’t have to visit.

  4. I think it’s nice when an artist or audience can evolve.
