I drink while breastfeeding, so arrest me

Reading about the arrest of this woman, on charges that she was “drinking while breastfeeding” really got my hackles up.
And that’s what I’m blogging about over at Babble today.

I have to agree with you on the issues of the government making an ethical decision on drinking while breastfeeding. I am sure it was a judgement call on the law enforcement officers at the time, and they sometimes need to act and let the jury decide…sometimes.
Alcohol is a simple compound that the body actual produces and is very easily metabolized. A simple way to get a fussy baby to sleep is to breastfeed after a glass of wine or beer. Just saying.
I however would not take a SSRI while breastfeeding. Research has shown very dangerous long term side effects with the newer SSRI’s. There are simpler and more natural ways to cope with depression and anxiety that will not have any long term side effects. Marijuana. No, this is not a post to legalize. Just stating the facts.

I agree with you on that. I drank while breastfeeding (well, I also took a VERY SMALL glass of wine on a few special occasions during my pregnancy), although never more than one drink and I always tried to time it well (right after I nursed) so it would be mostly out of my system by the next feeding.
In fact, I did a post on breastfeeding earlier this year, I think it was after you discussed a New Yorker article on it, but I’m not sure… Anyway go take a look if you have a second, not for the post as much as for the accompanying image. It’s an old French ad I found, which actually promotes drinking beer as healthy and vital for breastfeeding. Really odd and funny.

This is ridiculous. There is no law on drinking while breastfeeding. Lawmakers and Police Officers, I doubt, know anything about breastfeeding & what happens to the body when drinking alcohol. We’re turning into a Nanny State. There is nothing wrong with one drink while nursing, or nursing after having a drink. The problem would be nursing when intoxicated and then there are issues also with handling a baby and being in charge of a baby while drunk. Ridiculous. I am getting sick of uninformed people making uninformed judgements and thinking they know it all to punish others for what they think is wrongdoing.

Nobody, currently.
