He can hear you so clearly now.

This was so beautifully written. I'm so sorry to hear about how hard things were for your father, and for all of you.

This post was very much on my mind last night. I discussed it with my BF, who now understands why I don't want to risk changing medications, even though doing so might help reduce side-effects and could possibly aid in physical pain relief. I don't want to disturb what's working adequately enough. It's so sad about your father's Great Change and his continued deterioration. Again, I commend you for sharing. Mental illness can be such a struggle for the person suffering from it, and for those who care about him/her. Sadly, sometimes, for our own health and safety, we really do need to distance ourselves from said person. That's going on in my BF's family right now, due to how abusive the person with the mood disorder is. Such a decision doesn't come lightly.

Katie thank you for sharing this. Uncle always talked about Robert, you,Betsy along with many stories about his grandkids,he loved you all and would let us know every trip to Calafornia. That last trip was pretty rough on all of us and I miss my Uncle. I want to share this with you, he was very proud to be a part of KFWB as you know, when we got him checked into the V.A. I was takling with a nurse and was checking on Hank and she asks is that Hank Allison from KFWB ? First I was shocked then I replyed yes it is, she wanted to met your dad and asked Hank to hear his voice and he said {This is Hank Allison reporting for KFWB} and I will never forget the smile on his face it was great to see.

Hank would compete on every story--not just for the story, but for the best mic position on the podium, the best camera angle at the presser, the best everything. For those of us who were young pups in reporting, he could be our uncle, and then he would throw an elbow if he thought we were about to beat on him on something. I always liked that about him. I like that about his daughter, too.

So sad. I hope that someday mental illness can be better diagnosed and we understand more about the brain to be able to treat more effectively.

Also, I have a neighbor whose SIL is going blind and the doctors believe it is from Agent Orange. He is having to jump through a lot of hoops to show he was in an area where it was being released in order to get this documented (they are very, very wealthy so the health coverage is not a financial burden). I think it is very good that you write about this aspect of your dad's possible health issues as well, especially for future veterans of the Gulf War.
