This reminds me of the Wise Man scandal at the Episcopal church I grew up in. Year after year, kids were in the Christmas pageant, working their way up from lamb to donkey to shepherd to - if they were really talented - the prize part of Wise Man, because the Wise Men got to sing solo parts in "We Three Kings." Then, one fateful year, the pageant direction was handed over to a stage mother who promoted her own kid straight from lamb to Wise Man.
