Update – Henry’s Fund

Thank you so very, very much to everyone who has made a donation thus far to The Henry Louis Granju Memorial Scholarship Fund. Henry’s father, stepparents, extended family and I are working to start an endowed, permanent fund that will award scholarships to families who need help paying for drug and alcohol treatment for their children. I wanted to give those of you who have donated an update on where things stand with donations and planning so far.
Within the next week or two, we will be depositing the checks that have been sent to the acting Fund administrator, James Anderson, to an account opened in the name of the charity. Then we will begin the process of getting official non-profit status for the Fund. None of the money that has been donated will be touched until we have the 501c3 status in place.
Created with Admarket’s flickrSLiDR.
Our goal is to raise enough money to provide a standing, interest-bearing source of funding that will allow us to provide these scholarships on an ongoing, regular basis going forward. Thus, the money that has been donated since Henry’s death provides the seed money for this endowment. Within the next few months, we will establish a Board of Directors for Henry’s Fund, and we will begin planning larger scale fundraising efforts to build on this seed money. I would also like to learn how to apply for potential grant funds to help with our fundraising efforts.
My hope is that we will be able to provide the first scholarship(s) in 2011. Our family welcomes your input, involvement and ideas on growing Henry’s Fund, on fundraising and on outreach to the families who will benefit from our work in Henry’s memory. So if you have great ideas, or would like to be on the email list I am establishing for Henry’s Fund, leave comments below or send your email to HenryGranjuFund – at – gmail dot com.
Thank you so much -
Katie

While I cannot imagine that a gifted writer such as yourself would need much help, I have been writing grant proposals for my mother’s non-profit for years and can at least give you the names of some local foundations that may be interested in partnering with you on this project. Just let me know when you get to that point.

I teach Grant Writing at a university here in Austin and would be happy to give you some direction when you get to that point. Most grant proposals follow a pretty standard format (problem/solution/cost); once you’ve done your first one you can cut and paste the rest. The first step is to research potential funders. Austin has a library devoted to foundations; your town may, too. If not, your local university reference librarian can point you in the right direction. If people are asking if there is anything they can do to help, doing some recon on this might prove very helpful down the line. Please don’t hesitate to find me through FB if you’d like any help.

Katie, I’m sorry if this is a stupid question (or one that was already answered–I followed the links and didn’t think I saw this, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t there!), but to whom exactly should the checks be made out? I wasn’t quite sure of this.

I LOVE his paintball letter. That’s precious!

so after that well thought out argument over the paintball (I read every word), did you give in?
i would like to be on the email list as this progresses. i also suggested to carl snow that instead of downloading “in lieu of flowers” for free, he could attach a cost to it with the funds donated sent to henry’s fund.
i’d be willing to write some grant proposals for you. i’ve only done it once for habitat for humanity, but i’m sure there’s not much difference. just let me know.
warmest hugs from nj,
jeanne
