Dear MSNBC:

In reference to this thing you published online today, who the hell CARES where 11 year old Marco Rubio “enthusiastically” attended church? When I was 11, I “enthusiastically” read Tiger Beat ALL THE TIME!!. So what?

And why in your story and headline, do you make the LDS faith sound like some shameful secret to be “revealed” about someone? Seriously, I’m neither LDS nor a Republican, but I am offended by this stupid, pointless and bigoted attempt at a hit job on Rubio.

Isn’t there any real news you could cover?

Sheesh.

  1. Agreed! I feel sort of the same way about the big headline today about Sarah Palin’s divorce e-mail from five years ago. There’s probably no public figure I dislike more than Sarah Palin, and there is a lot of stuff about her family life that may quite legitimately be fair game for media coverage, but an e-mail that alluded to marital problems prior to her run for VP? I could even understand if the e-mail was part of a list that attempted to summarize or give snapshots of the 17,000 of her e-mails released under FOI this week, but the divorce e-mail has been the lead in way too much of the coverage.

  2. So I don’t comment here, but am a regular reader and put in my two cents from time to time on Justice for Henry, but THANK YOU. And amen sistah. As a Mormon and Republican (we can still be friends yes?) it is beyond refreshing to see people standing up against this nonsense. It’s ridiculous. Truly. And I applaud you for this post as I do for so very many of your posts. You are champion for people. And truly heroic. Thank you.

  3. Thank you Katie! I saw this and COMPLETELY agree with you. It’s nonsense.

  4. First time I’m commenting because I wanted to say: Thank you. I don’t always agree with your politics but I respect that you are respectful and unbiased in calling out people who are being jerks, even if they are “on your side”. This sort of baiting over religion is nonsense. I hope and pray that one day we’ll get to the point where it won’t matter what faith someone is or was.

I am Roman Catholic, but all the Mormons I have ever interacted with were polite, intelligent, hardworking, nice people. And yet they are still angrily denigrated, by all sides. I really and truly don’t get it.

  5. If a candidate were criticized for being a Muslim, Jewish, etc…all hell would break loose. Some religions are ON the table for this kind of thing and some are definitely NOT. As a fellow Episcopalian, I am utterly sick of of Christianity in general being the whipping post of religions. Not surprised Mormons have now been admitted to the club. Unreal.

  6. I dislike Rubio for lots of real reasons, don’t need this one. Agreed.

  7. It has disturbed me that religion gets brought into the picture and politicians are panned for it. It was particularly noticeable with Obama and his Moslem background though he is not a Moslem. But this has been the case since Kennedy and his Catholicism.

I think the story was more a report on what the reaction might be to Rubio’s connection with Mormonism and the impact this connection may have in terms of his being a viable VP candidate. Unfortunately, it may well come into play, and it is a factor that should be discussed in any article assessing Rubio’s possibilities of being Romney’s running mate. (I am already assuming that Romney will get the nomination)
