I am baffled by why major media outlets keep making specific note of the fact that Nancy Lanza, murdered mother of Sandy Hook gunman Adam Lanza was apparently “ordered to take parenting classes” when she was divorced 3 or 4 years ago.
In Connecticut, where Ms. Lanza was divorced all divorcing parents who will retain any custody of a minor child in their divorce are required by the court to complete a state-approved parent education seminar.
ALL of them.
I also had to complete court-ordered parenting classes when I was divorced in Tennessee in 2004. And I had to offer proof of completion to the judge as part of the process of obtaining a divorce that involved children. So just like Nancy Lanza, and like every other divorcing parent in Tennessee, Connecticut and a growing number of states, I was also “ordered” by a judge to complete a parenting education seminar.
There’s nothing noteworthy or instructive about the fact that Nancy Lanza, the divorcing, custodial mother of a 16 year old boy would have to complete her state’s designated parent education classes before the judge would sign off on her final divorce paperwork.
